History

Kappa Kappa Gamma was founded October 13th, 1870, at Monmouth College in Monmouth, Illinois by six exceptional young women who believed they could take on the world and create something totally new.

These six founders of Kappa Kappa Gamma were among the first women to avail themselves of the privilege of Greek-Letter societies, that is to organize into congenial social group for the cultivation of friendships and intellectual stimulation. The six are from left to right:

Mary Louise Bennett
Hannah Jeannette Boyd
Martha Louisa Stevenson
Mary Moore Stewart
Susan Burley Walker
Anna Elizabeth Willits

Currently Kappa has a membership of 220,000 with 134 collegiate chapters across the United States and Canada, and nearly 300 alumnae associations worldwide. Our chapter here at Texas Christian University is the Epsilon Alpha Chapter established on April 12th, 1955, and it is located in the Theta province. Kappa is a women's fraternity because the word sorority was not coined until after our founding.

Academics

The women of Kappa Kappa Gamma hold academics as a top priority and as an important part of membership. In compliance with Texas Christian University and the bylaws of Kappa Kappa Gamma nationals, we require a minimum GPA of 2.5 for all members and a 2.75 for all officers. We hold all members accountable to this standard and strive to provide support for those who are struggling to reach this GPA. The academic committee encourages its members by awarding women with exemplary GPA's with prizes every semester. We also reward one woman from each pledge class who has made significant effort to improve her grades with a prize. In addition, this year the academic committee in conjunction with the TCU Kappa Mothers Club we are hoping to provide all members with an in-house tutor free of charge to its members.

Symbols

Flower Flower
The fleur-de-lis was chosen as our flower because of its general dignity, stateliness and grace, and because it combines the two blues of the fraternity in one flower.

Jewel Jewel
Our jewel is the sapphire, and it was chosen because it is recognized as a symbol of truth, sincerity and constancy. It is also the gem of autumn, the time of the birth of KKG. It embodies the heavenly spirits of light and wisdom.

Badge Badge
The golden key was selected by the founders as the badge of Kappa Kappa Gamma. The badge is worn strictly as an emblem of membership and only by initiated members. Members may not lend their badges to anyone except other Kappas.

Mascot Mascot
The owl was chosen as a symbol for our fraternity because it is the bird of wisdom as well as the bird of Minerva, the Goddess of Wisdom.

Coat Coat of Arms
The Fraternity Coat-of-Arms combines the well known symbols of Kappa Kappa Gamma: the key, the Greek letters, the new member pin, the fleur-de-lis, the owl and the two blues.

Colors Colors
Dark blue and light blue.
